Article excerpt

MORPETH Town assistant manager Jon McDonald believes that his side are finding their level within the BetVictor NPL Premier Division this week.

The Highwaymen travelled to play-offchasing Mickleover Sports on Tuesday night and put on an impressive performance as they claimed a point with a 1-1 draw in Derbyshire.

Third-placed Basford United will be the visitors to Craik Park later on today as Town try to start climbing the table after their FA Cup run has left them with as many five games in hand over their rivals.

McDonald said: "They (Basford United) are near the top of the division, so if we can come through games likes this, and Mickleover on Tuesday, and get points, which we did on Tuesday, that will be a good gauge for us.

"We are behind in games because of the FA Cup, so to come up against two teams like this will be a good benchmark for us."

Former Hartlepool United midfielder Liam Noble is set to make his home debut for the Highwaymen after appearing in the FA Cup defeat at Nantwich Town last weekend and the 1-1 draw at Mickleover Sports in midweek.

South Shields midfielder Phil Turnbull believes that his side are showing a nasty streak that can put them on their way to a fourth promotion in five seasons.

Morpeth's Graham Fenton and Lee Picton's side have become renowned for their slick, passing style in their rise up the non-league pyramid - but today they will return to the scene of one of their hardest-earned wins of last season as Lee Mason grabbed the only goal of the game to give his side a narrow win in Cheshire.

Former Gateshead and Darlington midfielder Turnbull is hopeful his side can continue to "earn the right" to play their brand of football to secure another win and extend their lead at the top of the table. …
