ST. AUGUSTINE --- They came to see the dream foursome, and according to the biggest draw of all, the only real gallery at The Slammer & The Squire got what it wanted.

With a notable exception.

The three superstars paired with Jack Nicklaus yesterday at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf --- partners Lanny Wadkins and Tom Watson and Nicklaus' partner, Ray Floyd --- played well. That according to Nicklaus, who said there was only one thing missing from a foursome designed to boost attendance at the event, held for a second consecutive year at the World Golf Village:

Him --- or at least, what he considers his best game.

"Watson and Wadkins played very well and my partner played very well," said Nicklaus, who has won more major tournament than any other golfer, but who added of his day yesterday:

"I watched."

What Nicklaus, in the Legends for the first time since 1993 at Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem's request, saw was Wadkins and Watson play consistently. They shot 62, making 10 birdies and finishing the opening round in a three-way tie for second, three shots behind leaders Andy North and Jim Colbert.

"It was a perfect day to score --- very little wind," said Watson, a five-time British Open champion who --- like Wadkins --- is a Senior Tour rookie and playing the Legends for the first time. "We ham-and-egged it pretty well for two old guys."

Nicklaus and Floyd, meanwhile, managed just four birdies, two on the front nine and another two on the back.

"Obviously, I played very poorly," Nicklaus said.

Not that the gallery following cared much how anyone scored --- so long as they got to see the foursome, particularly Nicklaus. With attendance disappointing last year, Finchem asked Nicklaus to play in the event in an effort to boost attendance. Finchem also had Floyd call Nicklaus to convince him to play. …
