Unloved to Preloved: New Life Breathed into Space; Step into a Haven of Upcycled Creations

A TEESSIDE couple has transformed an "unused and unloved" space above a Linthorpe Road bar into an upcycling heaven.

Three Little Birds Upcycling is the brainchild of Gary and Sarah Foster.

Gary swapped a 20-year career as a drug support worker with the NHS to pursue his dream of running a business. In just a few busy weeks, the couple has overhauled the first floor of Ta Moko in Middlesbrough into four rooms.

Each is decorated in a different style, showing off the firm's upcycled creations.

And everything, down to the light fittings and fireplaces, is for sale.

"The space can also be used as a venue for workshops, pop-up markets, acoustic music sets, exhibitions or just a chill space," says Sarah.

Now Gary and Sarah want to collaborate with other creative businesses on Teesside. But it was doing up their own home that first sparked a future in upcycling.

"We live in an old Victorian house in Hartlepool and modern-day furniture just doesn't fit anywhere," Gary said.

"So we had to buy old furniture.

"We went to charities to buy stuff.

Instead of going to B&Q I would go to small wallpaper shops and keep it local."

Gary was a clinical support worker at the time.

When the chance for redundancy came up with the NHS, he grabbed it.

"I had a quick decision to make, I was given the weekend to decide - so I took the plunge," he said.

"I am still very passionate about the principles behind drug treatment.

"I was a clinical support worker with a caseload of 100 patients with opiate addictions.

"But I'm 42 now and it requires tremendous amounts of energy.
