MAJOR changes have been announced for Middlesbrough's biggest running events after plans for a new festival were unveiled.

The first Middlesbrough Running Festival will take place in September incorporating distances for all ages and abilities, with free entry for children.

Key changes will see the 5K and 10K - previously ran on separate weekends in June and September - brought together for the first time.

The route of both races will also change, with the 10K moving from its home since 2004 at Hall Drive Acklam to the town centre.

Thousands of people take part in the events every year.

The new course will take in Teesside University, the Transporter Bridge and a finish in Centre Square.

We're back 2020 the in Fun runners can also enjoy a riverside run and join in the finish with the 10K runners.

The Ali Brownlee 5K will also have a new start and finish location in Centre Square.

Runners have previously finished in the Riverside Stadium, but organisers say the home of the Boro will still be part of the route.

The 2K - previously held at the same time at the 5K - will now be moved to its own day and be renamed the Ali Brownlee Schools Challenge.

It follows the 2019 success of the Ali Brownlee Riverside 5K and Middlesbrough Run for All 10K, formerly the Tees Pride 10K.

The previously named Ali Brownlee 2K Fun Run will also be back as the Ali Brownlee Schools Challenge.

Taking place on the Friday morning, the event will offer medals for all entrants and schools across the borough are being encouraged to sign up. The Ali Brownlee Riverside 5K will be held on the Saturday, celebrating the lasting legacy of the Voice of the Boro, while the 10K will take place on the Sunday. …
