JONES RE-SIGNS

The Jaguars re-signed tight end Damon Jones to a one-year contract yesterday. Jones, who was a restricted free agent, will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2000 season. Yesterday was the last day for teams to sign other team's restricted free agents to offer sheets, meaning Jones was no longer free to sign with another team. Jones caught 19 passes for 221 yards in 15 games last season, including eight starts. Jones recently had been accused by a woman of rape, but last week the woman was charged with filing a false rape report.

NEW COACHES

A pair of Gateway Conference high schools announced the hirings of football coaches yesterday. Lee tabbed offensive coordinator Randall Glass as the man to replace departed coach Ed Barrett, and Parker named linebackers coach Larry Reed as David Boland's replacement. The tradition-rich Generals stumbled to a 1-8 mark last season under Barrett and haven't been to the postseason since 1997 when they were ousted in the first round by Clay. …
