Carroll War Chest Reaches $447,000 Rep. Brown Confident She Still Has Edge

WASHINGTON -- The race for Florida's 3rd Congressional District seat has picked up steam, as fund-raising for both the incumbent and challenger surged from April to June, according to campaign documents.

Republican challenger Jennifer Carroll easily met her previously declared target, garnering $325,459 during the second quarter.

That left Carroll's campaign with $447,494 on hand. In comparison, the Republican challenger two years ago had only $13,171 at the same juncture.

"This is going to be a good year, especially in Florida," said Marit Babin, spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee. "The way that Jennifer Carroll has been out there solidifying her base, she's really running a great race."

By comparison, Democratic incumbent Corrine Brown doesn't appear to be doing much, neither solidifying her base or raising much money, Babin said.

"That will be to her detriment," she said.

Brown said she wasn't worried by her opponent's bursting coffers, perhaps in part because Brown's own effort at passing the hat has been going well.

Brown's campaign took in $143,325 during the second quarter, or nearly 10 times the amount she raised during the same period in 1998.

"I'm on my time schedule. I have a good message," Brown said. Her campaign now has $195,318 on hand.

During 1998, nearly $1 million was spent by both the Republican campaigns. …
