The Fernandina Beach Stingrays are taking 14 swimmers to the 6-and-under River City League Championships this morning at Terry Parker High School in Jacksonville.

Leah Wright, who just turned 5 last week, is the Stingray's youngest swimmer. She and her 8-year-old sister, Lindsay, joined the team this summer. Leah has won six ribbons in three meets and looks forward to winning another honor in the 6-and-under championship.

Each participant gets a championship pin. The top three overall finishers receive an Olympic-style medal. Swimmers who make minimum times in their events also receive medals. Ribbons are awarded to heat winners and fourth- through eighth-place finishers.

Stingrays participants also include Jenny Bremer, Emma Coombs, Will Bonk, Emily Gavin, Samantha Hoskins, Jillian Lunt, Stephen SooHoo , Jackie Mallon, Billie Dawn Murray, April Ross, Matthew Stafford, Taylor Rowland and Anna Solis.

SWIMMING LESSONS

The Martin Luther King Center will offer swimming lessons Monday through Aug. 4 for swimmers on Levels 1-5. Lessons will be offered from 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. For more information, call 277-7350.

KIDS FOOTBALL LEAGUE

This fall, the National Football League will offer a new flag football league for boys and girls.

Kids from Fernandina Beach, Yulee, Callahan, Hilliard, O'Neal and Bryceville are encouraged to participate. They will be split into four age divisions: 6-9 coed, 10-11 coed, 12-14 boys and 12-14 girls.

The eight-game season kicks off in August, but a pre-season tournament will be held at the end of next month. Registration is open until Sunday at 815 Elm St. The cost is $75 per child. For more information, call 261-0673.

YMCA ACTIVITIES

Registration begins Aug. 1 for a free NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition. The event will be held at the Fernandina Beach High football field on Sept. 9.

Boys and girls ages 8 to 15 will be separated into four age divisions. Winners will advance to a sectional competition. …
