Amateur Gets Ace, but Can't Have Truck

Article excerpt

Tucker Lemley of Lake City experienced both good and bad timing last Monday in the final round of the Gateway Chevrolet Memorial Day Tournament at the Lake City Country Club.

A rising senior at Columbia High School, Lemley was playing with Lake City assistant Rob Meeks in the four-ball format when the two arrived to the tee of the par-3 17th hole. Lemley and Meeks, along with a team of two other club assistants, C.J. Provo and Denny Felton, were the final group of the day.

Gateway Chevrolet was sponsoring a hole-in-one contest at No. 17, with a $20,000 truck as the prize. But after two days, and with only four players left to hit tee shots at the hole, the vehicle appeared headed back to the lot.

Meeks, Provo and Felton hit their shots into the green, with no aces. Then Lemley, the last competitor to play the hole for the tournament, proceeded to knock a 4-iron into the hole from 179 yards out.

Amazing luck? Guess again. Lemley still has one year of high school golf left, and has aspirations of playing college golf. Since accepting a prize larger than $500 in pro shop merchandise would have meant the loss of his amateur standing according to United States Golf Association rules, he had to decline the prize.

"Well, he still gets to claim a hole-in-one," said Lake City head professional Dale Wiggins.

The ace helped Lemley and Meeks finish second in the gross division of the tournament at 66-67133, just a shot behind winners Richard Ames and David Beasley (65-67--132).

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Northeast Florida Youth Foundation, an organization started at the Lake City Country Club to expose more youths to sports such as golf, tennis and swimming.

HEADING SOUTH -- Steve Dodson and Mark Petzold of Jacksonville were co-medalists last week at a Florida State Golf Association Amateur qualifier at Windsor Parke. …
