Pinellas Newborn Dies after Family Dogs Attack

TAMPA -- A sign on the fence outside the house warns to beware of the dog, but no one believed the two big pets inside were vicious enough to kill a newborn.

The dogs bit and crushed the skull of 18-day-old Jasmine Dillashaw moments after her mother left the infant in a swing Friday while she went into another room to warm a bottle for the fussy newborn, authorities said.

The dogs -- a 90-pound German shepherd mix and a 50-pound Labrador-pit bull mix -- were in a master bedroom with Nicole Dillashaw's baby, according to relatives.

Dillashaw, 20, heard her daughter crying, went back to the bedroom and found Jasmine bleeding and motionless in the swing, said St. Petersburg police spokesman Rick Stelljes.

Authorities weren't certain if the infant was attacked by one or both of the pets, but the infant was bitten on the head and her fragile skull was crushed.

Jasmine was rushed to All Children's Hospital, where she underwent surgery and died Friday night, Stelljes said.

Bear, the shepherd mix, and Malachi, were in quarantine at the county animal control shelter yesterday.

Stelljes said the baby's death appears to be accidental.

"It's a tragedy," said Jim Trainor, Jasmine's great-grandfather. …
