Article excerpt

If you think you're tough, enter the inaugural Iron Cop Run this morning on Amelia Island.

The Fraternal Order of Police is hosting a 17-mile beach race that begins at the Nassau Sound Bridge, cuts up American Beach and through Fort Clinch State Park and ends at the Atlantic Recreation Center on Atlantic Avenue.

"We wanted something like a physical challenge," said Iron Cop Chairman Gary Gosselin, who works with the Department of Defense's Police Training Division and security at Kings Bay Naval Submarine base near St. Marys, Ga.

Gosselin estimated the run would take four hours. The race begins at 8 a.m. and is open to the public although law enforcement and military personnel also will be participants. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. in the Amelia Island State Recreation Area near Nassau Sound.

The FOP is asking for a $25 donation from each runner. Participants will receive free T-shirts. Prizes include a three-day, two-night stay at a villa in the Amelia Island Plantation Resort, a one-night stay at the Ritz-Carlton and a one-month free membership to the Amelia Wellness Center.
