Helping to reinforce the myth that brutal and sadistic killers are being mistreated by the criminal justice system, the Economist newspaper recently said that last year in Florida "it took much too long to kill a 300-pound man, Allen Lee Davis, who was shown contorting and bleeding in pictures that were released to the world on the Internet."

Let's go back to May 12, 1982.

Davis, a 6-foot, 340-pound career criminal and child molester, entered a Jacksonville home where a woman lived with her two children.

Davis savagely beat the woman -- who was three months pregnant -- to death with a pistol.

At least she was spared the pain of viewing what happened next.

Her daughter Kathy, 5, tried to get away. Davis shot her in the back and then crushed her skull.

Kristina, 9, came home, excited about her birthday the next day. Davis tied Kristina's hands, placed her on a bed and shot her in the chest and face at point blank range. …
