An Answer to Prayers Anglicans Get Their Area Church

Article excerpt

JACKSONVILLE BEACH -- A new Anglican church congregation has begun meeting in Jacksonville Beach, making the Beaches home to one of just seven Anglican Catholic Churches in Florida.

Holy Trinity Anglican Church meets weekly at Beach United Methodist Church, but church officials hope to expand so the group eventually can have its own building.

Holy Trinity is one of the Anglican churches that have formed across the United States and in other countries since the 1970s.

In the past three decades, many Episcopalians became frustrated with changes in the Episcopal church and left to join Anglican groups, said the Rev. Mark Haverland, the bishop of the Diocese of the South for the Anglican Catholic Church.

Sasser, 63, said he advertised last year to find people interested in joining an Anglican church that would be like the old Episcopal church in ways such as using the 1928 Book of Common Prayer.

The Anglican Catholic Church follows the Catholic faith, which is derived from the Church of England. The term Catholic in a church's name designates it a branch of the Catholic Church that's separate but still teaches the Apostolic faith.

Anglicans are encouraged to pray daily, conduct regular Bible studies, meditate, fast on Fridays and during Lent, and pledge financial support to the church.

Most people who responded to Sasser's ads live at the Beaches, where the group began meeting in January. The state named Holy Trinity an official church in April.

The Anglican Catholic Church is made up of regional dioceses throughout the United States and other countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Spain and South Africa. …
