What started as an activity to answer the question of how many ROTC magnet students it takes to blow up a balloon turned into a re-enactment of the Hindenburg explosion.

Eleven students in the ROTC military science program at Ribault High School yesterday constructed a 9-foot balloon from tissue paper to learn a basic principle of flight.

Their teacher, Lt. Col. Jack Howell, guided propane gas up the students' design to create a hot-air balloon. The lesson was an opportunity for students to see how hot air rises and cold air contracts.

After battling the wind, Howell and the students were able to guide the propane to make the balloon rise. But before it could lift off, the balloon caught on fire. …
