Competition Heats Up for Gator Bowl Junior Tennis Players

Two years ago, perhaps, Noah Tyler may have survived his first-round match in the Gator Bowl Junior Tennis Championships.

Then, the tournament was a state-sanctioned event only, drawing players from Florida and a few surrounding Southern states. Beginning last year, however, the Gator Bowl was added to the National Junior Tennis event list, resulting in an increase in the number of applicants and, consequently, in the level of competition.

Tyler, the fifth-seeded 16-under boys singles player, learned that lesson April 29 after dropping his opening match to unranked P.J. Passalacqua of Naples 6-4, 6-4.

"Everybody is good here," said Tyler, an Oviedo High School junior,

That was a sentiment shared by many of the competitors last weekend, who participated in the three-day tournament at the ATP Tour International Headquarters and four other area sites.

The tournament featured divisions for boys and girls ages 12-under through 18-under. …
