SWITZERLAND: 90% OF KIDS IN CONGO GET POLIO VACCINE

GENEVA -- A worldwide campaign to eradicate polio has reached 90 percent of the children in the war-wracked Central African country of Congo, the head of the U.N. Children's Fund said yesterday.

Returning from the latest three-day round of vaccinations in Congo, which ended Sunday, Carol Bellamy said the campaign still faced obstacles in immunizing one-tenth of the country's 11 million children under age 5.

Bellamy said fighting caused no major problems with the latest immunizations, which reached both government- and rebel-held parts of the vast country. But she conceded that parts of Congo remain out of reach for health workers.

In the previous round of immunizations in Congo, carried out last month, a nurse was killed and two aid workers injured in an ambush in the east of the country. Congolese rebels backed by neighboring Rwanda and Uganda have been fighting the government for two years.

ISRAEL: OFFICIALS FOIL SMUGGLING OF ARTIFACTS

JERUSALEM -- Customs officials and archaeologists have intercepted a crate containing ancient artifacts that apparently had been destined for the underground antiquities market abroad, officials said yesterday.

The artifacts date from 3000 B.C. to 1000 A.D. and include coins, pottery, bronze items and small statues. They were looted from archaeological digs around Israel, Yoav Sarhi, an archaeologist with Israel's Antiquities Board, said yesterday. …
