Defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews promised that his unit would not turn in another performance like Saturday's scrimmage, when it was cut up by FSU's first- and second-team offenses. The defense delivered on Andrews' promise with a vastly improved effort in yesterday's morning workout.

"It was a better practice than I thought it would be after a scrimmage," FSU coach Bobby Bowden said. "Usually they're dragging.

"It will pick up, there's no doubt about it, because I've got the kind of coaches that will make it pick up."

Perhaps inspired by Andrews' post-scrimmage tongue-lashing and extra running, the defense more than held its own during the 11-on-11 scrimmage at the end of practice. Junior DT Eric Powell and senior DE Jamal Reynolds came through with sacks of Jared Jones and Chris Rix, while tandem DTs Tony Benford and Rian Cason flushed Chris Weinke from the pocket with a push up the middle.

Bowden insists on more of the same.

"It's very obvious looking at the [scrimmage] film, we've got to get better fundamentally . . . or we're going to be in trouble," Bowden said.


It has taken a little longer than offensive coordinator Mark Richt had hoped, but the light is finally flickering in junior QB Jared Jones' eyes.

Fresh off a summer of minor league baseball -- Jones batted .111 for Seattle's rookie league team -- the Walla Walla, Wash., native has shown significant improvement in practice as well as Saturday's scrimmage.

"Jared is really improving," Richt said. "He had a good scrimmage, even though his statistics didn't show it."

While directing the second-team offense, Jones was just 5 of 16 for 61 yards, but was hurt by three drops and a pass batted down at the line of scrimmage. …
