Senior S Derrick Gibson isn't overly concerned about the Seminoles defensive deficiencies throughout two-a-day practices, but he's quite wary of the problems Brigham Young's can create in Saturday night's opener at Alltel Stadium.

"Any team that can catch and throw like BYU has a chance to stay with anybody," Gibson said. "Playing BYU is a great challenge. . . . They can throw and catch just like Florida. It's a test for us."

Gibson will get his first real test in more than two weeks after suffering a mild knee sprain that kept him out of the final two preseason scrimmages. He said his knee is 90 percent healthy.

As for the health of the defensive unit, he has an explanation of the sickly performances in three scrimmages.

"I can't say it's really a concern because we have a great offense.," Gibson said. "I'd say we have one of the best offensive lines in the country right now. We're playing against one of the best offenses in America right now."


Senior LB Tommy Polley's recovery from January reconstructive surgery continues to progress so much that he saw considerable action in non-contact drills during last night's practice.

Polley, who wasn't expected back on the field until the Sept. 9 game at Georgia Tech, could be cleared in time to face BYU. Freshman LB Kendyll Pope will start if Polley is not cleared.

"There's a chance," FSU coach Bobby Bowden said. "More of chance than a week ago."

Bowden also described senior LB Brian Allen's availability for the game as "iffy" though the Lake City native said he expects to start.


Rain forced the 'Noles inside for a walk-through practice last night, but the team ended up taking the field for a 90-minute workout inside the stadium later. No new injuries were reported. . . . …
