Bethune, Savannah State Have History Gateway Classic a Special Occasion

Friendly rivalries aren't usually this friendly.

Bethune-Cookman College and Savannah State University held a news conference yesterday at the West Club in Alltel Stadium to mark their programs' 75 years of football and hype the 47th annual Gateway Classic Sept. 2.

"It's the thing about old coaches; it's like a fraternity" said Savannah State head coach Bill Davis. "We put all friendships aside on the field. Off the field, we're friends. During recruiting, it goes off again, though."

Although Davis just returned to coaching at Savannah State this season after coaching the Tigers from 1986 to 1992, he is aware of the narrow 17-14 loss last season.

With as much history as there is between the two schools, each team is competing for bragging rights.

In the 32 times, dating back to 1925, that the Tigers and the Wildcats have played, Bethune-Cookman leads the series 22-8-2.

There is more at stake than a win for Savannah State. Looking to impress the NCAA, the Tigers are petitioning for a permanent spot in Division I-AA, and a win at the Gateway Classic would help. …
