What's in a name?

For some business owners desperately trying to shed an old, negative image of their district, a good name means everything.

As part of a continuing effort to reintroduce their district as a new, viable area for businesses and residents, 23 business owners along Philips Highway North voted this week to begin identifying their area as the Metro South Business District of Jacksonville.

Businessman Richard Hugo said he believes the group, which for the last five years has been battling the area's reputation as a haven for prostitution, drugs and violence, took a step closer to restoring the impression he had of the area as a child.

"We've [Hugo Fine Furniture & Interiors] been in business for 80 years, and in this location for about 50 years," Hugo said. "I've seen the good, the bad, and now it's heading back in the right direction."

Hugo and several other property owners have donated a considerable amount of time and money trying to revitalize the area. …
