Collins Gets Residents' Thumbs-Up

Conceptual design plans for widening Collins Road from Rampart Road to Blanding Boulevard are getting the thumbs-up from residents.

"I think the design really looks good," said Thomas Dumas, who is in the real estate business. He was one of about 50 people attending a town meeting on the subject Monday night.

City Council President Alberta Hipps, who represents the area, called the meeting to get reaction from residents.

Collins is a heavily traveled two-lane road with drainage ditches. Plans for the $11 million project call for the two-mile stretch to be widened to four lanes with a divided grass median. There will be bike lanes, sidewalks and drainage improvements such as curbs, gutters and two stormwater retention ponds.

But the project is in the early stages. Right of way acquisition will not begin until after Oct. 1, 2002, said John Pappas, the city's manager of paving and drainage design. And construction probably won't begin untillate 2003 or early 2004. …
