Northeast Florida Likely to Keep 904 New Area Code Urged for Outlying Sections

TALLAHASSEE -- Northeast Florida should be allowed to keep its 904 telephone area code, the Public Service Commission staff said in a report this week.

The staff recommended creating a new area code, tentatively 386, for counties west of Baker and south of St. Johns and Clay that are now in the 904 code. If the recommendation is approved, Putnam County is among the areas that would get a new code.

The Public Service Commission will vote on the recommendation Sept. 5.

It is the second time in three years that the commission has had to change telephone codes in the area.

Jacksonville city officials and the business community protested so strongly when the PSC voted to change the city's area code in 1997 that the commission reversed itself and gave that new code to Tallahassee.

Businesses contended that changing codes would impose expense for changing stationery, advertising and Web sites and would confuse customers.

"I think it's great that we are able to keep it," said Jean Moyer, communications director for the Jacksonville Area Chamber of Commerce. …
