Article excerpt

Dallas at Washington, or Jerry Jones (left) at Dan "The Fan" Snyder, two of the NFL's three owner-coaches, on Monday night, Sept. 18. Five years ago, Jones upstaged Phil Simms' retirement party on a Monday night at the Meadowlands by parading on the field with Monica Seles and Phil Knight to announce a deal with Nike.

Jerry and Dan are already planning how to upstage each other.

Return engagement: Dec. 10 in Dallas.

P.S. Al Davis is the other one.

-- Ricky Williams (left), RB, New Orleans. New coach, new QB, good OL and even new agent. If he stays healthy.

-- Donovan McNabb, QB, Philadelphia. Best long-term QB prospect in class of '99.

-- Shaun King, QB, Tampa Bay. The second best. "Just like Kurt Warner, but two inches shorter," says St. Louis coach Mike Martz.

-- Randy Thomas, G, Jets. Looks in his second year like he's been around for a decade.

-- Torry Holt, WR, St. Louis. "The next Jerry Rice" just might be.

-- Jon Jansen, OT, Washington. More important to Skins than Deion, Bruce and Jeff.

-- Champ Bailey, CB, Washington. Some consider him the NFL's best cover corner and he's only a sophomore.

Note: Both Jansen and Bailey were drafted by Charley Casserly, not Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato.

Kerry Collins has had an excellent preseason with the Giants, has the best receiving tandem (Amani Toomer and Ike Hilliard) the team has had in three decades, and so far is getting protection from the made-over offensive line.

If that continues, Collins' career could make another 180-degree turn.

Mike Riley, San Diego. He went 8-8 last year and appears to have won over Ryan Leaf. If they avoid major injuries, Chargers will be in wide-open AFC West race.

-- Norv Turner, Washington. After his $100 million spending spree, Dan the Fan will take nothing but a Super Bowl win. Between Oct. 22 and Nov. 20, the Skins play Jacksonville, Tennessee and St. Louis. Lose two and/or to Dallas and Snyder might make Ray Rhodes the coach.

-- Bruce Coslet, Cincinnati. He would be gone already if Mike Brown was willing to eat his contract.

-- Vince Tobin, Arizona. Same situation as Coslet. Bill Bidwill's waiting until after 5-11 season.

-- Jim Fassel, New York Giants. Must make playoffs.

-- Bill Cowher, Pittsburgh. Another 6-10 and ....

-- Dan Reeves, Atlanta. Could save his health (see his commercials) by staying as GM and hiring new coach.

-- Ray Rhodes, defensive coordinator, Washington. See "Shaky coaches".

-- Unknown. Offensive coordinator on successful team.

-- Unknown. Defensive coordinator on successful team.

-- Unknown. A black assistant, perhaps Art Shell, who will be interviewed, but not hired.

-- Marty Schottenheimer, ESPN. Would consider only a few offers. …
