Bidders Support 2 Charities at Annual St. Marys Auction Organizers Hope to Bring in $30,000 Saturday

Article excerpt

ST. MARYS -- It's not the Kentucky Derby but an upcoming charity event will have the feel of the world's most famous horse race.

Guests will be greeted by staff dressed as jockeys. They will sip on mint juleps, eat derby pie (pecan pie cooked with Kentucky bourbon and chocolate) and have a chance to wager play money on horse races from the nation's top tracks.

It's all part of this year's theme, A Night at the Races, for the fourth annual Panorama Charity Auction at Osprey Cove in St. Marys. All proceeds from the event will be split between the American Cancer Society and the St. Marys Submarine Museum.

Organizers expect to raise at least $30,000 Saturday with the nearly 300 items that will be up for bid at the silent and live auctions, said Maury Stewart, event coordinator and community manager at Osprey Cove.

Stewart said the auction was created as a way to support two charities that generate widespread community support.

"This is becoming more and more a recognized event throughout the area," Stewart said.

More than $80,000 has been raised for the charities the past three years.

John Crouse, manager of the St. Marys Submarine Museum, said the auction generates about 20 percent of the museum's annual operating budget.

"It's vital to our existence," Crouse said. "It's our largest annual fund-raising event."

Among the auction items expected to fetch between $5 and $1,000 are:

-- A limited edition autographed football by Jay Berwanger, winner of the first Heisman Trophy in 1935.

-- Footballs autographed by Jacksonville Jaguars players Bryan Barker, Leon Searcy, Jimmy Smith and Alvis Whitted.

-- Autographed comic strips by Garfield creator Jim Davis and Hagar the Horrible cartoonist Dik Browne.

-- A Tour de France T-shirt autographed by Lance Armstrong, winner of the event the past two years. …
