'Noles Go Full Throttle in Rout FSU's Offense Carves Up Heels

Article excerpt

TALLAHASSEE -- When Florida State jumped on North Carolina for 28 points in the first 6:57 of last season's 42-10 rout in Chapel Hill, Tar Heels' coach Carl Torbush called it, "seven minutes of a living nightmare."

Torbush will have to adjust his time reference for what the Tar Heels endured yesterday.

Second-ranked Florida State (3-0, 2-0 ACC) left the Tar Heels dazed, confused and on the short end of a 63-14 pummeling in yesterday's home opener in front of a Doak Campbell Stadium crowd of 79,287.

"We didn't give ourselves a chance in any form or fashion," Torbush said. "There is not much that I can say in a positive manner except that today will pass."

North Carolina (2-1, 1-1) looked nothing like the defense that came into the game limiting opponents to 8.5 rushing yards a game. Tailback Travis Minor rushed for 112 yards on 16 carries, leading a ground attack that piled up 194 yards, ending a record streak of eight consecutive games under Bobby Bowden with less than 100 yards. It was Minor's first 100-yard rushing performance in eight games. …
