Educational Community Credit Union has broadend its charter again, making it easier to join.

The credit union, which started out serving teachers during the Great Depression, now covers residents of Duval, Clay and St. Johns.

It is waiting for clearance from regulators to start serving residents of Baker and Nassau counties, said John Hirabayashi, president and CEO last week.

The credit union's expansion plans includes a new headquarters in downtown Jacksonville. At present, it has 11 offices, including its current headquarters.

This month, the credit union opened a new branch at 220 Florida 312, in the Riverside Shopping Centre in St. Augustine.

Another branch will open next month at 10290 Baymeadows Road, in the Reedy Branch Commons shopping center at the Florida 9A intersection.

Founded in 1935 as the Duval County Teacher's Credit Union, ECCU is Northeast Florida's second-largest credit union, with $420 million in assets and more than 72,000 members.

DEBIT CARDS FOR TEENS

Bank of America launched the "Buxx" card, which gives parents the ability to view their teens' spending habits online.

The Buxx card is neither a credit card nor a debit card but rather a prepaid stored value card.

Teens receive their own card, embossed with their name and account number, to use at places agreed upon with their parents.

The new product also includes various marketing tie-ins, including a gift certificates program with participating merchants and a discount program.

Security features of the card include limits on the amount of funds that can be loaded onto the card and limits on the frequency and amounts that can be withdrawn from an automated teller machines. The accounts also have a unique personal identification number, a user ID and password for online access to protect the security of the account. …
