Attention drivers: You do not want to be in the area around John Stockton Elementary School in Ortega Forest from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. on weekdays.

That's because a large number of students are carpooling to the school at 4827 Carlisle Road this year, Principal Sara Hollander said. And that has led to traffic backups.

"It gets real congested in the afternoon," said Jenny Pike, a teacher at the school.

Notices have been sent home to parents letting them know to enter the school from the south and exit to the north.

But motorists in the community need to be aware they should avoid the area during that time of day, Pike said.

This year, there are more carpoolers attending Stockton, a math, science and technology magnet school, Hollander said.

"I think a lot of parents are choosing for their children not to ride their bikes or walk," she said. "And I think a lot more are coming from Venetia, Timuquana and Ortega for the magnet program without it being their assigned school. …
