Friends Shaken by Glynn Slaying Gun Fatality, Burial Uncharacteristic

BRUNSWICK -- Yukie Tatro was mourned yesterday by friends who recalled her gentle nature as well as her love of children and gardening.

"She was just the sweetest person. A very gentle soul," said Pam Kesegi, a friend and executive director of Amity House domestic violence shelter where Tatro had been a volunteer.

"Yukie was always smiling. She was a devout Buddhist and always had this sense of peace and serenity about her," Kesegi said. "For someone like her who lived by the Buddhist principles of love and peace to die so violently seems as inconceivable as it is horrible."

Tatro, 53, died of a gunshot to the back of the head. Her death has been ruled a homicide based on the autopsy done yesterday at the state crime laboratory, said Glynn County Coroner Jimmy Durden.

Her body was found buried Thursday. It was in a makeshift grave amid a carefully landscaped garden at the front yard of her home in an upscale marshfront Glynn County subdivision.

Her husband of 29 years, William David Tatro, has been charged with malice murder in her death.

Tatro was arrested Wednesday night after he told police he accidentally shot and killed his wife last Saturday while showing her a .9mm pistol. Police said Tatro told them he buried her several hours later at Red Maple Lane home using a backhoe because he panicked.

Capt. Jack Hopper said detectives arrested Tatro, who had reported his wife missing Sunday, because "the evidence is not consistent" with the explanation he gave about her death.

"We have not pinpointed a motive, but we are exploring several possibilities," said Hopper, declining to say more.

Tatro, 52, remained jailed without bond yesterday at the Glynn County Detention Center. His attorney, Bob Crowe of Brunswick, also was unavailable for comment yesterday.
