News-Oriented Internet Sites Offer Valuable Tips, Information

Dear reader advocate: I have been unsuccessful in attempts to retrieve a news article from the Oct. 14 edition, headlined "FDA approves multiple sclerosis drug." I would appreciate any assistance you might provide retrieving that article. -- L.B. McMillan.

In your case, you could go directly to the source, the Food and Drug Administration. You can find its Web site (www.fda.gov) by entering it in any search engine. My favorite search engine combines several engines in one: www.metacrawler.com. Also, there are Web sites that collect a number of government agencies. My favorite is www.govspot.com. Once you have arrived at the FDA Web site, go directly to News or Press Releases. If you have trouble finding it, look for the Site Index, which often can be found on the bottom of home pages.

If you still want to find the news story, the Times-Union saves most locally written stories on its Web site but not wire stories. Therefore, you have to use other means. You can go to The Associated Press on the Times-Union's Web site and search free for stories over the past two weeks. However, you have to register. I turn to The Washington Post's search engine or CNN to find wire news stories (www.washingtonpost.com and www.cnn.com). I found the multiple sclerosis story quickly by using The Washington Post's site.
