Meet New Consumer Panel Members

A retired registered nurse, aviation maintenance technician, homemaker, motel clerk and Naval officer comprise the mix of our new Times-Union Consumer Panel.

Such foods as ham and cheese grits, foil-packed tuna, pour and simmer taco seasoning, stuffed waffles and Mrs. Dash's latest blend have them raring to go. Let's meet our new panel.

-- Retiree Sally Becker and her husband, Paul, live in the San Jose area and have two grown sons. Together they own a small mortgage company.

Becker has had multiple sclerosis for more than 30 years and uses a walker -- "I refer to it as my Cadillac" -- to get around. However, she says it doesn't prevent her from doing what she wants to do.

An enthusiastic cook, Becker is not only interested in new recipes, but also fast and easy ways to prepare them. She thrives on aqua aerobics, enjoys her indoor cactus garden, has fun doing crafts with her two grandchildren and is a volunteer with the Epilepsy Foundation.

Becker and her husband love to travel, and a trip to Italy is in the works.

-- Robert Irvin and his wife, Janet, live in Avondale. He works in the aviation department of CSX Transportation and she is director of development at Pine Castle School.

Just talk to Irvin, and you'll discover cooking is his passion. "I actually enjoy planning, shopping for and preparing meals in our home," he said.

Cajun and Southwestern dishes are his specialty, and Irvin says he's learned how to look at a recipe and see how to cut the fat.

But, it's not all KP duty. Irvin also enjoys long distance running, bicycling and hiking and still finds time to do volunteer work at Riverside Avondale Preservation and Pine Castle School.
