NEW VERSIONS OF AOL, MSN UNVEILED

America Online Inc. unveiled the newest version of its AOL software yesterday, which includes a new feature that allows people to get certain online information through the telephone.

With AOL 6.0, subscribers will be able to go online and preprogram the basic information they want available over the phone, like stock quotes, weather forecasts and sports scores. Those subscribers will then be able to dial a toll-free number to hear the information over the phone.

AOL, which said Tuesday it had reached the 25 million subscriber mark, was not the only Internet service provider to show off a new look. Microsoft released its new MSN service yesterday.

MSN has a much smaller share of the market -- about 3.5 million subscribers -- but it has repackaged its services in an effort to bite into AOL's base.

NORTHWEST, CONTINENTAL ANTITRUST TRIAL POSTPONED

The federal antitrust trial over an alliance between Northwest Airlines and Continental Airlines has been postponed until next week at the request of the carriers and the U.S. government.

The trial, which was to have begun today in Detroit, was pushed back to Nov. 1, a clerk for presiding U.S. District Judge Denise Page Hood said yesterday.

The Justice Department wants Hood to order Northwest, the nation's fourth-largest airline, to divest the majority voting interest it acquired in No. 5 Continental in 1998, saying the deal violated antitrust laws.

The government argues that the ownership stake diminishes competition incentive between the two carriers, leading to higher ticket prices and worse service.

Continental defended the sale when the lawsuit was filed in 1998 but now wants to buy back the shares, putting the Houston-based carrier in the awkward position of coming out a winner if it loses the case. …
