FIRE DESTROYS EATERY

Fire gutted a Brunswick restaurant Sunday night, firefighters said, resulting in an estimated $80,000 in property damage but no injuries.

The blaze at the Old South Restaurant, 3810 Norwich St., apparently was sparked by an electrical cord to a coffeemaker, said Lt. Jerome Johnson of the Glynn County Fire Department.

"It has been ruled accidental," Johnson said.

The fire was reported at 9:20 p.m. by a Glynn County police officer on routine patrol in the area. Firefighters arrived three minutes later to find the restaurant filled with flames and smoke.

A total of 27 full-time and volunteer firefighters battled the fire, assisted by two fire engines, an aerial truck plus a rescue squad and tactical support vehicle, Johnson said.

Firefighters stayed at the scene guarding against flare-ups until about 1:40 a.m. yesterday, Johnson said.
