Train Hits Car Stopped on Rail Driver Escapes without Injury

A Jacksonville woman was shaken but uninjured after an empty coal train clipped the rear of her Ford Explorer about 10:30 a.m. yesterday at Timuquana Road and Roosevelt Boulevard, spinning the truck through a red light and into the intersection.

"I was standing still," said Marlo Cash, 31. "The next thing I knew, the train hit me. Thank the Lord, the people who were oncoming stopped.

Conductor Harold Powell said he saw Cash drive in front of the CSX train and disappear in front of the engine. But he said the train was too close to the truck to stop. Powell said he called to the train's engineer to apply the brakes.

"We hit her just as he hit the emergency handle," Powell said.

Other witnesses said Cash had crossed the tracks and stopped before being slammed by the train.

Congressional candidate Jennifer Carroll and a handful of supporters were at the intersection, waving at passing motorists. Carroll said she saw Cash stopped.

"When the train hit her, it pushed her out into the median," Carroll said. …
