ATLANTA -- The question has been asked for years at Georgia Tech: What would happen if this team actually had a defense?

Now we know.

On a night when the high-scoring offense put up more staggering numbers, the Yellow Jackets defense took center stage with its first shutout since 1993.

"This definitely makes a statement," defensive end Greg Gathers said after No. 24 Georgia Tech blew out Virginia 35-0 Thursday. "Basically, we just shut them down on first down. That made them predictable."

For the Yellow Jackets (7-2, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) to shut down any team at any time was an anomaly. They usually win because of a high-scoring offense.

Last season, Tech ranked first nationally in total yards (509 per game) and second in scoring (40.7) -- yet still managed to lose four games because of its leaky defense.

There was an especially galling 45-38 loss at Virginia, when the defense failed to hold two 17-point leads. The Cavaliers rallied and knocked Tech out of contention for a major bowl. …
