Bama Turned Tide in Charlton Win

Article excerpt

CARTERSVILLE -- The University of Alabama's fight song is Yea, Alabama.

Crimson Tide fans didn't have much to cheer about this year, but Charlton County's fans had plenty of cheers for their Bama -- senior quarterback/safety Bama Adams, who's actually named for the university -- Friday night in the Indians' Class AA quarterfinal playoff game against Cartersville.

Adams, a Times-Union Super 11 preseason pick and a postseason North Florida-South Georgia Super 24 selection, scored four touchdowns, including one on an 89-yard interception return just before the half, as the Indians stormed past the defending state champion Purple Hurricanes, 33-9.

"It's always hard to say at the time, but looking back on it, yeah, that was probably it, that probably finished 'em off," Charlton coach Rich McWhorter said yesterday of Adams' interception return that stopped a Cartersville drive and gave the Indians a 20-3 halftime lead.

Charlton, which won the 1999 Class A championship before being shifted to AA in last spring's Georgia High School Association reclassification, will play Americus, a 28-14 winner over Northgate Friday night, in this week's semifinal at noon Friday in Atlanta's Georgia Dome.

"Americus will be one of the biggest challenges we've ever had," McWhorter said after the game. "I've looked at film, and I tell you, that's the best team we've faced in my 11 years. Americus is going to be tough. I'd have to say Americus is the best team in the state of Georgia."

All semifinals in the five classes on Friday and Saturday, will be televised statewide on Georgia Public TV.

Charlton, which has been No. 1 in The Associated Press Class AA poll most of the year, is 12-1. Its lone loss, a 26-19 decision to Class AAAAA Camden County, came in the last 29 seconds of the season opener. …
