It was a simple enough idea. Why not let children lend a hand to help other children, said Julie Handley, spokeswoman for Jacksonville's I.M. Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless.

"Of course, we can use all the support we can get," she said. "But we thought about doing something that involved children because -- well, what better way to help young people begin to form lifelong lessons about caring for others? When you set patterns of behavior in childhood, they stick with you."

The program, called Kids Helping Kids, began Saturday. Individuals or groups of children work to raise money to sponsor nights of shelter for children in need. Just $11 buys a night of shelter for a child, which includes a warm bed, hot meals and supportive services.

Some children organized into groups to participate in the Kids Helping Kids program. Every group that sponsors at least 10 nights of shelter will have an ornament shaped like a house hung on a Christmas tree at The Jacksonville Landing. For more information, call the I.M. Sulzbacher Center at 359-0457.

"Children are the fastest-growing segment of Jacksonville's 3,000 estimated homeless," Handley said. "So we thought this was a particularly appropriate idea."
