Barnes Has $2.4Million War Chest Re-Election Fund Fat despite Loans to Others

ATLANTA -- Eighteen months before his re-election campaign, Gov. Roy Barnes' campaign treasury stands at $2.4 million, even after helping support other Democratic candidates in their races last year.

A disclosure report he filed yesterday showed Barnes used fund-raisers to add just more than $2 million last year to the nearly $1.2 million already in his treasury. After spending about $750,000, he still had $2.4 million on Dec. 31.

Contributors included a who's who of Georgia lobbyists, law firms and business leaders. Kristin Oblander, Barnes' finance director, said the governor raised the money during events such as barbecues and receptions around the state.

One of his largest expenditures was a $310,000 loan to the state Democratic Party to help provide support for the campaigns of Democrats last year. The party repaid $200,000 of the loan.

Barnes also paid $340,000 to finance a television ad campaign last year to build public support for his education reform act. …
