An orientation class for parents who want to learn more about home-schooling their children is set for 7 to 9:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at Abundant Love Ministries, 2525 Dunn Ave. Cost is $2 per person. Call 751-3569 to register.

"There's growing interest in home-schooling, and we're here to answer questions parents have about the process," said Nathan Rachal, who along with his wife, Lindley Rachal, will conduct the orientation.

Rachal said the orientation covers the law, requirements and curriculum and disseminates information sanctioned by the Home Education Resources and Information group.

"Initially, many parents are interested but feel they may not be qualified to teach their children," said Rachal, who has home-schooled his children for 10 years. "We not only inform them on the requirements, but let them know about how parents network so that a parent with a particular expertise can, for example, teach several students a subject they specialize in. For example, if one parent is a veterinarian, he might be well-suited to teach biology. Issues like that become particularly important for high school-level courses."

Rachal said parents are also eager to learn about the support groups that can help students gain the socialization parents often fear their children will miss.

"Parents often worry that their children will be too isolated and suffer from lack of socialization," he said. "But in our experience, they soon learn that there is no substitute for the one-on-one instruction they receive."
