Activities Set Surrounding Martin Luther King Holiday

Several churches and organizations in Nassau County are planning events to commemorate civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., including a breakfast, speeches and a parade.

A Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Extravaganza will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the New Zion Baptist Church, 10 S. 10th St. in Fernandina Beach. The program is open to the public and will have Addison Winston as the youth speaker and the Rev. Rob Goyette of Living Waters Outreach Center as the keynote speaker.

The Nassau County Branch of the NAACP is sponsoring an MLK Commemorative Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Atlantic Avenue Recreation Center in Fernandina Beach. The keynote speaker will be Marie Rizzo, president of the Amelia Island-Fernandina Beach-Yulee Chamber of Commerce. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students; they are available at City Hall and from NAACP members.

Proceeds will go to college scholarships, said Patricia Thompson, a Fernandina Beach city commissioner and an NAACP member. …
