Wolfson High Students to See Inauguration

Wolfson High School student Hogan Humphries got the right to vote last year when he turned 18, and he cast that ballot for George W. Bush for president.

Today, he and 80 other Wolfson students will see the results of that and millions of other votes when they watch Chief Justice William Rehnquist swear in the former Texas governor as the 43rd president of the United States, following the most contested presidential race in history.

The senior, part of a school trip for advanced placement social studies and government students, said he expects part of that history will be protests from people who don't believe Bush won the election.

"It is probably good, because it shows that people have an interest in politics and what is happening in the country," he said.

Senior Raman Subramania, 17, didn't get to vote, but said he looks forward to being there as well, especially after the contested election.

"I don't think he [Bush] should be president, but I will see history in the making in seeing him inaugurated . . ." he said. "I am sure I will be writing some papers, and I will cherish the experience of even going and seeing the inauguration."

Bush will be inaugurated during a ceremony that begins at 11:30 a.m. today on the west side of the U.S. Capitol. Rehnquist will conduct the swearing-in ceremony for Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney as more than 1,000 dignitaries watch from the inaugural platform. The traditional parade will then wind its way down Pennsylvania Avenue.

This is the third straight inauguration the Southside school has been present for, starting when juniors and seniors saw Bill Clinton inaugurated in 1993 and again in 1997. The chaperoned trip included visits to other Washington sites like the Smithsonian, Lincoln, Jefferson and Washington memorials, Ford's Theater, the Vietnam Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. …
