HEARINGS ON AGING

The Southeast Georgia Regional Development Center's Area Agency on Aging will holdhost two public hearings on programs for the elderly that willare set to begin July 1.

The public is invited to the programs to hear information on the programs and to comment on them. The agency provides programs for residents of Atkinson, Bacon, Ben Hill, Berrien, Brantley, Brooks, Charlton, Clinch, Coffee, Cook, Echols, Irwin, Lanier, Lowndes, Pierce, Tift, Turner and Ware counties.

Two public hearings will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Feb. 13 at the Leroy Rogers Multipurpose/Senior Citizens Center, 315 West. Second St., Tifton; and from 1 to 2 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Nelson Greene Senior Center, 1615 Carswell Ave., Waycross.

PTAS COUNCIL LUNCH

The Glynn County Council of PTAs will meet at noon Feb. 21 at Captain Joe's Seafood on U.S. 341.

Lori Joiner, Glynn County's teacher of the year for 2000, will speak and Glynn County's teacher of the year for 2001 will be recognized.

GRANT FOR MEATPACKER

Announcing the first results of his "One Georgia" initiative, Gov. Roy Barnes said yesterday that a $1.5 million grant from the state will enable a major meatpacker to open a plant in Moultrie and offer jobs to more than 200 people.

Besides offering new jobs, the plant will substantially help cattle farmers, Barnes said.

"In an agricultural environment where profit margins are much too slim, the availability of processing close to production will create more business opportunities," Barnes said. …
