JU Preparing for New Start Dolphins to Play in Pioneer League

Jacksonville University has no more excuses. The fourth-year football team is now expected to win.

And the Dolphins plan to be more than competitive in their first season in the Pioneer Football League.

"Our main goal, of course, is we want to win the Pioneer conference championship," All-American linebacker Tommy Swindell said. "We've all been talking about it. There's no more excuses about being young and what have you. It's produce now or never."

Yesterday, the Dolphins opened spring practice with 78 players. Twenty-four comprise the program's first senior class and 19 are returning starters, including All-American receiver Brett Palmi and Swindell.

The team also retained its head coach, Steve Gilbert, who signed a three-year contract extension in January.

JU, a non-scholarship team, is in the PFL's Southern Division with Austin Peay (Tenn.), Davidson (N.C.) and Morehead State (Ky. …
