Here in the northwest part of St. Johns County we have a beautiful library staffed with very knowledgeable employees. One is Brad Powell, children's librarian and assistant branch manager.

Once a month, Powell puts on a "Family Night," during which the entire family is invited to share in stories, games and snacks. Each month, the nights bring an average of 80 people to the library.

Powell said he is partial to the Family Nights when animals are featured. "We've had a hedgehog, a rabbit, an oak snake, live chickens, dogs, 8-week-old puppies, miniature horses, guinea pigs, hermit crabs, prairie dogs, birds, guide dogs for the blind and even a Jaguars football player."

Powell not only stretches the minds and imaginations of children, he gives them a tangible understanding of some animals that they would normally never come in contact with.

The library provides three storytimes a week for children five and younger, with an average of 100 patrons coming to enjoy the children's programming each week.

At 7 p.m. Monday at the branch at 60 Davis Pond Blvd., Powell invites children to join in welcoming 2001 Newberry Medal Honor Winner Kate DiCamillo. The author will present highlights of her book Because Of Winn-Dixie, interact with children in the audience and distribute copies of her book.

Americorp Volunteers will be on hand to read with children as DiCamillo circulates and visits with them. For more information on the children's programming, call Powell at 287-4929.
