Coetzer Highest Seed Remaining in Semis

AMELIA ISLAND -- The exits of top three seeds Martina Hingis, Conchita Martinez and Elena Dementieva leave South Africa's Amanda Coetzer as the highest remaining seed in the Bausch & Lomb Championships.

After her 6-3, 6-3 victory over 10th-seeded Meghan Shaughnessy yesterday afternoon, fourth-seeded Coetzer became the tournament's highest seed to make the semifinals. Sixth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo and seventh seed Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario are the remaining seeds.

"It's great for me," said Coetzer, who is No. 10 in the WTA rankings. "From now on, every match I win here is a big bonus."

Coetzer will play her fourth semifinals match in eight Bausch & Lomb appearances. She has never advanced any farther. In 1998, she lost in straight sets to Martinez in her last semifinals run. Last year, Coetzer suffered a straight-sets loss to Sanchez-Vicario in the third round.

Coetzer said she feels good about her fate this time around after her 7-0 start this year on the clay courts, which includes a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 defeat of ninth-ranked Dementieva in the Acapulco finals. …
