St. Johns County's Betty Griffin Place, a shelter for battered families, hosts the Race for Love 8K run at 7 a.m. Saturday at Julington Creek Plantation Park in Fruit Cove.

The road race is being held in memory of those who have died because of domestic violence, and costs $15 per participant at the event. Those interested registering early can do so at the Bartram Trail branch library. All proceeds benefit the Betty Griffin House.

The shelter also is holding its annual Day Without Violence art contest. The contest is open to children 6 to 18, and the color drawings or paintings submitted must show how to start a day without violence. All color artwork must be submitted at area public libraries, including the Bartram Trail branch on Davis Pond Boulevard, between 1 and 5 p.m. June 2. Awards include $100 for first place and $50 for second place.

For more information on either event, call the shelter at 808-8544.
