History Theme on Road Ride Groups to Learn about Clay's Past

Two groups with similar interests but very different modes of transportation will go on separate journeys into Clay County's past today.

One group will be attired in jeans, T-shirts and leathers, straddling dozens of Harleys, Hondas and other motorcycles. The others, somewhat more staid in appearance, will be traveling in a motorcoach on a bus tour arranged for people attending the 2001 annual Statewide Preservation Conference in Jacksonville.

Both groups share a common goal: to learn about Clay's past by visiting some of the county's more interesting historical sites.

"It sounds like we're going to have a lot of people out here Saturday," said Susan Soltys, Clay County Director of Tourism.

Those arriving on two wheels -- or in cars if their family is too large to fit on a motorcycle -- will participate in the Trivia Run, a 70-mile tour of historical sites in which participants will pay $5 each to compete for prizes in a game of trivia focusing on historical facts about Clay County at various stops.

The event is sponsored by the Black Creek Chapter of ABATE of Florida Inc., a lobbying organization that promotes awareness and education about issues of concern to motorcyclists. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Tanglewood Station, a shopping center at 1241 Blanding Blvd. All participants must leave by 11 a.m. and return to Tanglewood Station by 2 p.m.

The ride was organized to boost membership in American Bikers Aimed Toward Education and to raise money for Black Creek Chapter activities, including charitable events, while providing fun and education at the same time, said Larry Cosler, event coordinator.

"We're hoping for at least 100 people, if not 200," Cosler said. "We're going to Green Cove Springs, Middleburg, Camp Blanding and a couple of other places. …
