JU Stays Alive Dolphins Take Two in TAAC

The bats of the Jacksonville University Dolphins came alive at the best possible time.

Facing elimination in the Trans America Athletic Conference tournament, the Dolphins rode an offensive onslaught to defeat Troy State 10-6 and Florida Atlantic 12-5 yesterday at Brest Field.

JU plays Central Florida at 1 p.m. today and the Dolphins would have to beat UCF, ranked No. 8 in the nation and 3-0 in the tournament, twice today in order to capture the title.

With the two wins, the Dolphins (37-22) gave themselves a chance for at least an at-large berth in the NCAA regionals next week.

"I think we should go [to the tournament]," Dolphins coach Terry Alexander said. "With the teams we have beaten, and the way we came out and played in the game we needed, I think we should go."

In a 7-2 loss to Florida Atlantic on Thursday night, the Dolphins handed the Blue Wave four unearned runs. Florida Atlantic (36-24) returned the favor last night in the second game, as the Dolphins converted two Blue Wave errors into four unearned runs for a 5-1 Jacksonville lead in the top of the second.

Florida Atlantic rallied to tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the second and another in the third. But the Dolphins took the lead for good in the top of the fourth when Dale Johnson came through with an RBI single to score Chad Hauseman.

Dolphins starter Bryan Williams (2-0) struggled through his first three innings but settled down and shut out the Owls the rest of the way. First team all-TAAC catcher Chad Oliva went 3 for 5 with four RBI, including a towering three-run homer in the eighth, his 18th of the season.

"With all of the good pitching in this conference, you are going to have low scoring games in the early rounds," Alexander said. …
