Article excerpt

Byline: JUSTIN DAVENPORT

TWO of the prime suspects for the murder of Stephen Lawrence are being investigated for allegedly hurling racist abuse at a black police officer.

David Norris and Jamie Acourt are said to have insulted the plain clothes detective "in a threatening manner" as he walked out of Eltham railway station on Friday night.

The two men are said not to have realised he was a policeman and to have continued to abuse him for some minutes, at one stage hurling an object at him.

The incident took place just a few hundred yards from the spot where 18-year-old Stephen was stabbed to death by a racist gang in April 1993.

Yard sources confirmed officers were investigating an incident of alleged racial abuse at Eltham but said no arrests had been made.

Police are believed to be looking at pictures from closed-circuit TV cameras at the station and the surrounding streets.

It is not known if the detective was on duty at the time or whether he was connected to the Lawrence murder squad. …
