THE proposed closure of the Psychiatric Assertive Outreach Continuing Care (Pact) service is part of the wider reorganisation of services in Southwark (Fury at plan to axe "model" mental health care service, 19 April).

This includes the creation of the Trust's first home-treatment team, the strengthening of community services and the integration of health and social services across the borough. The aim of integration is to provide a "one stop" service which can meet peoples' health and social care needs.

This issue needs to be seen in the context of a [pound]1.3 million injection of resources in Southwark to improve services in line with the Government's National Service Framework for Mental Health.

If our proposal is approved by Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham, the people who currently use the Pact service will continue to receive support from the community-mental-health teams, which will be organised around local GP practices. We also intend to ensure that, as far as possible, they maintain links with their individual key worker to minimise the impact of the changes. …
