FORD has unveiled a diesel engine that will shock customers. The shock is that it's very good. For years Ford has chugged along behind rivals with a sluggish and frail 1.8 diesel, but the company has finally cranked up its efforts with a second-generation common rail diesel engine designated TDCi (Turbo Diesel Common rail Injection).

The first model to become available with the new unit will be the Ford Focus. Expected to cost around [pound]1,000 more than the current diesel-engined Focus - for anyone who still pines for the clatter of the old 1.8-litre TDDi diesel, it will not be replaced by TDCi - the new 1.8-litre engine develops 113 bhp, or 25 more bhp than the wheezy old TDDi.

This means Focus will reach 62 mph from rest in under 11 seconds, compared to the TDDi's 12.5 seconds, while maximum speed is lifted to a respectable 120 mph from 114 mph. But the real benefit comes during overtaking when, thanks to a massive 250 Nm of torque (pulling power), accelerating from 32 mph to 75 mph in fourth gear in the new diesel Focus takes less than 10 seconds. …
