Stuck for a good page-turner?

Katie Campbell suggests some of the best of this summer's holiday reading

One for My Baby, by Tony Parsons.

(HarperCollins, [pound]15.99.) Man and Boy, Tony Parsons's first novel, was a sob story about a man whose family falls apart after he's been carelessly unfaithful. In this much-anticipated follow-up, Parsons returns to the same territory. This time, the hero's adored wife has died after just a year of marriage. Now he has to choose between empty promiscuity and taking on the responsibility of a single mother with a troublesome child Yes, men have feelings, too. Well, some of them. Of a kind. When not overruled by their trousers. Out in July, One For My Baby is sure to be a top seller.

Death in Holy Orders, by PD James. (Faber, [pound]17.99.) Dalgliesh is back and in home territory - an Anglican theological college on the Suffolk coastline.

There's a killer concealed among the ordinands and some dark secrets emerging out of the past. Before the end, there's even a touch of romance, when Dalgliesh falls for a beautiful Cambridge don.

Agreeably atmospheric rather than ferociously suspenseful, Death In Holy Orders is a pleasure from start to finish.

Warlock, by Wilbur Smith, (Macmillan, [pound]18.99.) Willbur Smith never errs on the side of inaction. Warlock, set in Ancient Egypt, is packed with chariot battles, sudden death, torture, wild sex, magic sandstorms, evil sorcerers and child sacrifice. A young prince grows up to take power and get the girl, a princess, naturally. This is Rider Haggard on heat and if you pick it up you won't put it down.

The Red Room, by Nicci French (Michael Joseph, [pound]9.99.) When a young woman's murdered corpse is discovered next to a deserted canal, Dr Kit Quincannon is called in by the police to give a pyschological profile of the main suspect, who then savagely attacks her during their interview. …
